why do high doses of vitamin C make me so strong? i mean STRONG. grrrrrrr

i was reading an article of the benefits of consuming high amounts of vitimin C. its a supposed to be a cure for allsorts from the common colds to cancer (????). it mainly works on the immune system building it to a degree that nothing can attack it and win; therefore (theoretically) no disease.

the RDA is about 250 mg. i am on 1250mg a day, which is considered to be a very " low" dose in terms of high dose treatments. i mean a high dose program may be 10 0000mg (10 grams). the effect starts to sink in after a couple of days, and well for me my strength just increased and increaed; i am amazed. i am just wondering why this is so? anyone else here feel such effects? my libido has also taken a dramatic climb; almost too much at times. its got to be reduced : )

anyone here have knowledge and experiences on high doses of C?

or try it

  • Dr. Linus Pauling and Vitamin C research

    Hello Jon,

I read an article in Muscle & Fitness some time ago with a feature on the esteemed Dr. Linus Pauling (allegedly the only person to ever win two Nobel prizes as an individual).
    Basically:
    - Research shows that most animals produce their own vitamin C.
    - If humans were to maintain levels similar to those that capable animals produce for themselves, they would need about an ounce a day.
(This is like 100 of those 250 mg pills)!!
    - Allegedly, he personally takes similar doses and is seemingly sucessful.

    ~ peace ~

I believe Linus Pauling is dead now...not to detract from his findings, or the wonders of vitamin C...

I'd be curious to hear more about strength, libidio, and massive doses of C.

I am almost positive there is no effect on strength or libido from any kind of vitamin C dose. It's not something you feel, particularly.

For myself, I use the stuff to get better more quickly when I feel I am coming down with a cold. Works pretty well. That's one of the original uses Pauling came up with. The basic idea of the stuff is that the antioxidant properties of ascorbic acid allow certain parts of the immune system to work more efficiently. The research seems to bear it out. The idea is that primates lost their ability to manufacture their own vitamin C while on an all fruit diet. A professor of mine cured his rhematoid arthritis with the stuff; it was he that pointed it out.

I've also noticed (especially with vitamin E) it makes tough workouts easier to recover from, though you don't need such large doses to see this effect as you do for the antiviral properties.

Wow, has your professor written anything about his cure, or do you know any details 9was it big doses, etc.)? I'm curious, as my father has crippling rheumatoid arthritis, and C sounds much better than all the drugs he's taking.

Well, one cure isn't science: it's an anecdote. I know he took enormous doses; hundreds of grams a day. The way to gauge how much you need is with "bowel intolerance." Basically, you take the stuff until you get the runs: this is your baseline dose. I haven't kept track of him, so I don't know if the cure was permanent. He seems to be still among the living though, which is a good sign.

Thanks. I've heard of the bowel intolerance gauge before. Hopefully he's among the thriving and mobile.

lupo, ask your father to take 1.5 gams C a day. its perfectly harmless.... just be biased towards an alkaline diet. and ...

num, try that same dose, 1.5 grams a day. and

after about 6 six weeks please return to this thread and report any changes; such as on strength, libido, flexibility, effects on illness ect....thanks.

if anyone else who wants to join in, please do so.

My father doesn't need to take that much C. I myself have done it. As I said, I noticed it seems to help in recovery after tough sessions in the gym, especially with a little vitamin E. It's not science unless you have something you can measure statistically, but it works well enough I'll pay for it even if it is just the placebo effect.
