Fri, August 19, 2005 - 1:43 PMIf you lift less weight, you'll lose some strength. You could add weight to bodyweight excersises to help this out, or just concentrate on strength endurance for a while.

Tue, August 23, 2005 - 8:52 PMWhy not try the DVD by Karl Gotch, the guy who taught Matt Furey? It's a lot cheaper than CC too.

Scrapper is well-respected for his free workouts, though those who bought his products are happy too:

A little newer to the bodyweight "guru" scene is Ross Enamait. His books also get rave reviews, as does his customer service:
www.rossboxing.com/
To be honest, I use the methods of Scott Sonnon (Body Flow, Be Breathed), a Power Wheel, and portable gymnastic rings (can be quickly hung from a tree, playground, etc.) for my own bodyweight training. I haven't tried stuff by Scrapper or Ross myself. I didn't get much out of Combat Conditioning myself, but if I were dead set on trying that type of workout again, I'd rather get Gotch's DVD. -

Re: Matt Furey
Tue, August 23, 2005 - 10:26 PMI had no idea that original Karl Gotch material was available! Thanks a lot for that.
I like Matt Furey's stuff; I was an "early adopter" of Matt Furey's "big three" program in taking a hiatus from jiu jitsu. it is no joke to be able to do a couple hundred free weight squats. I worked up to 1000 at one point. That hurt. You need a lot of heart to do that.
IMO, there is no point in doing "hindu push ups" -for my body type, they were actively harmful for the shoulders. Better to do chins and handstand push ups. The bridge is also an important exercise to learn properly (and he teaches it properly: worth the value of the CC book), but not as important as he makes it out to be. Also, wall crawling is definitely bad for your spine unless you already have spinal erectors like boas (and maybe even then).
His rejuvination exercises are pretty good, but they are taken from a Farmer Burns book on catch wrestling which you can download online:
www.sandowplus.co.uk/Competi...ndex.htm
IMO, the best thing about Furey was that he got me interested in looking at what the mighty dudes of olden times did for exercise, before steroids, before suppliments, before bodybuilding in general. Looking at the Sandow Plus website will give you lots of ideas. The Saxon brothers and Goerner were truely amazing in their brute strength. Total insanity. Totally different methods, too, from the 3 sets of 10 done by modern muscle dorks.
FWIIW, I peaked out on my bodyweight program in doing 28 descending sets of this:
www.geocities.com/rutgerses...rison.html
It's way scarier and more extreme than anything Matt Furey advocates. If you want pure strength endurance; this is it. Supposedly, Royce Gracie does 100's of these in a row. Total pukesville. Not much for developing raw pulverizing strength, but if you're in a grappling game, this vreathin' stuff can really make a fighter.
enjoy the pain!

Tue, August 23, 2005 - 11:08 PMThanks Lupo I agree that the best thing Matt has done is interest me in other old time strongmen there is a good book called Dinosaur training by Brooks Kubick that I like.I was doing workouts from there and having great results with it but had a couple of injuries that just need some time off and thought Id give cc a try thanks for all the help. -

Re: Matt Furey
Wed, August 24, 2005 - 4:22 PMBrooks Kubik's book is really inspiring! It makes me want to go outside and throw big rocks. I still have a sandbag in the basement which I occasionally fool around with. I should figure out a way to make it less sandy. I was dissapointed in the real life application of sandbag tossing though. People's clothes tend to come off in your hands.
Anyway, good luck with your injury. I find training through helpful on most of those, excepting the one rotator cuff injury I had, which just plain sucked.

Wed, August 24, 2005 - 5:24 PMI found a great way to make your sandbag less sandy is to save your old jeans and sew it up in the pants legs before sticking it in your outer bag.Looks funny but seemed to help.

Re: Matt Furey
Fri, January 13, 2006 - 1:24 PMBurpees are my new favorite exercise. I was looking for a workout that simulated the endurance drain of jujitsu and I started doing 8-point bodybuilders that I learned in the Navy. Pretty much the Burpee with an extra hop to legs spread then back together before coming out of the squat thrust. Then someone showed me the Burpee with the hop at the end and I have been doing them ever since. This is an awesome exercise!
I like Matt Furey's products too. Much of what he teaches can be found elsewhere or I was already doing in martial arts, but it's nice to have his take on it and the material in one package. If I can't afford it, I don't buy it. This is much simpler than slammin the guy because he charges more for his products than others and markets them well. His products have started a lot of people on body weight exercises who didn't know where to start, so he's doing some good out there.
Just my take on it - Patrick

Re: Matt Furey
Fri, August 26, 2005 - 8:48 AMA good bodyweight program for pure strength, borrowed from gymnastics, is Coach Sommer's front lever and planche progression program:
www.dragondoor.com/articler/mode3/229/
The main disadvantage to this program is that it requires a lot patience - be prepared to spend lots of time apparently "doing nothing" but increasing your hold times to 60 sec. per position. Those who did give the program a fair shot reported surprising strength gains. -
